When Should You Seek Speech Therapy for Your Child?

Many parents and caregivers are told, often by well-meaning friends, family, or their child’s medical provider, that their concerns for their child’s talking, listening, understanding, or social skills will resolve with time and they should “wait and see.”

Many parents and caregivers are told, often by well-meaning friends, family, or their child’s medical provider, that their concerns for their child’s talking, listening, understanding, or social skills will resolve with time and they should “wait and see.”

While every child develops at their own pace, skilled speech-language pathologists can support children of all ages to assist them in meeting their developmental and academic milestones. Many SLPs have shifted away from the passive “wait and see” approach to an early, proactive therapeutic model where building communication skills can prevent further delays or academic struggles.

What Is Speech-Language Therapy?

Speech-Language Pathologists support a child with their communication, cognitive, and social skills.

This involves tasks to aid in understanding directions or others, expressing themselves, memory, problem solving, and social skills necessary for meaningful relationships.

What Are the Benefits of Proactive Treatment?

Rather than waiting and seeing, supporting a child early builds on the benefit of neuroplasticity.

The human brain is at its most adaptable during the first three years of life. This period of rapid neural growth means that a child’s brain is “primed” to absorb language, making it easier to establish correct speech patterns and language processing.

Speech and language skills are the building blocks for future academic success.

Why Does Early Intervention for Speech-Language Delays Matter?

Communication is a fundamental human need. When a child has thoughts, wants, and needs but lacks the tools to express themselves, it frequently leads to tantrums, often used as a substitute for words, social isolation due to difficulty playing with peers or joining group activities, and withdrawal when a child feels they are not being understood.

A child struggling with expressive language, or speaking, or receptive language, understanding, often faces later challenges with phonological awareness, which is essential for reading and writing. Research consistently shows that children with early language delays who do not receive support are at a higher risk for reading difficulties by third grade.
