Two Neighborhood Favorites, One Community First Mission

Although each restaurant has its own identity, owner Darin Engstrom said the goal for both is to serve food people enjoy while creating the kind of welcoming neighborhood atmosphere that cannot be replicated by a national chain.

"The chances are, when you come in, you're going to see one of us there helping out or doing something," Engstrom said.

Red Hen Taphouse

Red Hen has been a neighborhood gathering place since it opened in 2013. Engstrom was already a regular customer when the opportunity arose to purchase the restaurant in 2021.

"It was always my spot from the day it opened," he said. "It's by my house. I was super familiar with it, knew all the employees, and did events with them. When it came up, it just felt like a natural fit."

Red Hen's menu starts with familiar bar and grill favorites, but elevates them through quality ingredients and in house preparation. Its traditional wings, particularly the dry rub varieties, have developed an especially loyal following. Other popular choices include hand breaded walleye, Nashville style chicken sandwiches, grinders, burgers, and flatbreads.

Weekly events and specials give customers another reason to return, including Monday burger specials, Tuesday trivia, and Wednesday steak night.

But food is only part of Red Hen's appeal. Longtime employees have built strong relationships with customers, creating an atmosphere where guests often stop in as much to see the staff as they do to grab dinner or a drink.

"It's truly a place where staff members are getting invited to customers' weddings," Engstrom said. "It's not just another place where you walk in and don't know anybody."

Hen House Bar & Restaurant

Hen House joined the family in the fall of 2023, after Engstrom and his partners purchased the former Brickhouse location and transformed it into a new concept.

While Hen House shares Red Hen's neighborhood mentality, its menu and atmosphere have their own personality. The centerpiece of the restaurant is its large brick oven, which produces pizzas, calzones, and other specialties. Beyond pizza, guests can still find the wings, sandwiches, walleye, and elevated bar food that have become signatures across both restaurants.

More Than a Place to Eat

Engstrom's commitment to community is personal. An Iraq War veteran, he has close family connections to law enforcement and education. Both restaurants offer veterans, first responders, and teachers 15 percent off throughout the year.

The restaurants also support local schools, athletic teams, charitable organizations, and community causes through fundraisers, team meals, dine to donate events, and sponsorships.

Red Hen's annual charity golf tournament benefits Folds of Honor, an organization that provides educational scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled military members and first responders. The restaurant has been able to help fund a scholarship each year through the event. The restaurants also regularly partner with Moorhead athletic programs and community groups.
